Painting of Daphne and Apollo (c.1730s) depicting Peneus, the river God, turning the Naiad nymph into a laurel tree so she can avoid the lustful advances of Apollo. 

The heartbroken Apollo, God of poetry and light, made the Daphne Laurel tree the cultural symbol of poets and musicians to honor her forever.
